Why Is Starting A Book So Hard? (and how to overcome it)

Momentary+Lapses+of+Reason.png

Are you having trouble starting a project? Not sure where to begin your story, how to put those colors to a palette, or how to find a perfect line of code to start your new app?

I'm going to let you in on a secret. We ALL feel this way.

The hardest part of any book for me is the first 10,000 words (or about 35-40 pages.) As awful as it sounds, I can lose a month, two months, or more to those first 10K. I almost always start in the wrong place, and inevitably have to circle back around over and over and over until I feel like it works. And even then, there can be major changes later on.

I’ve always been envious of writers who can start at the beginning and work straight through to the end. That is NOT my process. Mine looks more like this:

Life-is-not-always-straight-forward-Kent-Healy-717x500.jpg

Tess Gerritsen blew my mind once. I paraphrase, but she said every book, when she sits down to start, she forgets HOW. She’s spot on. There’s a moment when the blank page stares you in the eye and says all sorts of nasty, cruel things. It reminds you of every one-star review you ever received, that your sales aren’t what they could be, that your idea is dumb, your title has been done before, every story is derivative, there are only 7 plots…

Beginnings embody resistance. They are resistance on steroids. They are resistance on steroids with a dose of mean girls for good measure. Mean girls with hemorrhoids.

Did I mention I don’t like beginnings?

But… beginnings are meant to be cowed into submission. And if it takes a month or more… so be it.

I do have a few tricks I use so there isn't great blank maw awaiting me when I start a project. The first is to do some basic things, like title pages and chapter headings. The second is to find a solid epigraph. The third is to not worry about that perfect opening line, only a sketch of what I want that opening to look like.

I write visually; I see the scenes quite clearly though I may not know exactly what's being said, so I describe the setting. I give the weather. It's FINE to do those things to get yourself going. Once you're underway, you can go back and craft your perfect opening. It's not unusual for me to actually write in screenplay parlance -- We are in a dark room. Characters X and Y are having a heated conversation in whispers, when character Z knocks on the door... and I build books chapter by chapter like this. It's an outline, in many ways. I also take the synopsis, break it into scenes -- might only be four or five -- and write them up like this.

You get the idea. Instead of starting for real, I cheat. That way, when the actual lines come to me, I'm not as freaked out when I see the emptiness -- because there's no emptiness!

Happily, right now, that first awful month is past. For the 21st time, the first 10K is over. Suck it, resistance. 😝

How do you get yourself motivated? Any tricks you'd like to share? And is there a point of no return for you, when you're committed to a project? Share in the comments!

Settling Back In

Momentary Lapses of Reason

I love to work travel. Being in a new place sparks all sorts of new ideas for me, and reinvigorates my mind. There’s only one problem… by the time I’m really settled in and hitting a flow, I have to leave. And settling back into the home routine is hard.

But settling in I am. Slowly but surely, habits are being resurrected. Here’s my perfect day:

  • Read papers, check email…
  • Breakfast β€” usually cereal with a banana, first of several cups of tea, and a book…
  • Second cup of tea with vitamins…
  • Sit down at the laptop…
  • Write up a storm…
  • Stretch/yoga/play with the kitties…
  • Lunch with a book, chat/text with a friend…
  • Check email/ handle business…
  • Back to the laptop to write some more…
  • Email and wrap business day…
  • Walk…
  • Dinner prep…
  • Read…
  • TV…
  • Bath…
  • Sleep.

How many days a week does this happen? Not as many as I’d like.

Several years ago, I instituted Sacred Days. I don’t schedule appointments, lunches, or other day time events Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, so I can have deep work time. These sacred days are vital to my production levels. When I break them, my work suffers, and I turn into a grump.

Since I’m at the beginning of a new book, and my normal patterns have been shot these past few months with travel and epically close deadlines, back come the sacred days! Their structure will allow me to get my footing again, and guarantee me at least a few quiet days of deep work.

How do you schedule out your days?

Sabbatical is over, so... I’m back!

Honey, I'm home...

Hello, good people! My social media Lenten fast was lovely and calm, but now I’m back β€” rested, recharged, and full of words. I hope you’ve had a lovely six weeks without me! Many props to The Kerr, who handled the socials so wonderfully! I know y’all had fun with her β€” thanks for all your sweet notes to us both.

Oh, SO MANY THINGS to talk about!

Blog Resurrection

I missed the bulk of the #quitfacebook kerfuffle, but I know many of you aren’t entranced with how FB is handling your info. Neither am I.

Because I would hate to lose touch with you if you are leaving, I’ve decided to resurrect my blog.

Aside from the privacy issues, FB frustrates me to pieces because while so many of you have joined my author page, you rarely see the posts unless I pay to boost them, so I think it's time to invite you to join me in my blog and we’ll go from there.

I have to admit, I’m rather excited to be jumping back into non-fiction. I miss blogging, but it won't exactly be regimented. Whatever is on my mind, I’m going to share. I’ve been very inspired by Nora Roberts’ blog lately. It’s fun, and relaxed, and that’s my goal. Don’t be surprised to see some rebranding happening next week, too.

And do me a small favor? Leave a comment to let me know you’re around and reading. Writing into the void isn’t fun!

New Books

THE SIXTH DAY is about to release (April 10).

Romantic Times gave it an extremely rare 5 Star Gold rating. It’s as crazy a thriller ride as you will take this year, guaranteed to please fans of the series, and hopefully entrance new ones as well.

During my sabbital, Catherine and I hooked up out in California and put together the 6th Brit in the FBI novel, which I am working on right now. We even have a title, though I don’t think she’s released that info yet (#socialmediasabbatical). It’s been a research-intensive month, with so many things to learn. The writing is underway, though! I had a great writing retreat in March, and am now regularly laying down words again.

TEAR ME APART went through two edits whilst I was away.

It’s going to be in galley soon, and we’re finalizing the cover. I just received the AAs β€” author alterations, aka last pass pages. This is my last chance to make any changes to the book before it goes into production. We do have back cover copy to share, so look for that on the blog shortly. Suffice it to say... Girl, Interrupted grows up.

Other Projects

Amy and I have been making books!

We have a spiffy new German version of NO ONE KNOWS for sale, and we’re busy putting together some print versions of my most recent short stories.

And (drumroll... πŸ₯) We're about to release our first Two Tales audiobook: an incredible vocal performance of the DEAD ENDS anthology! And there’s more in the works, including another anthology that is going to blow your mind.

A WORD ON WORDS has seen many new entries these past few weeks, so you need to check them out ASAP! One of the things that I think is very cool about AWOW is the fact that my co-host (Mary Laura Philpott) and I are both writers. It makes these interviews very much peer-to-peer, adding insight to both how we work and how the authors we’re interviewing approach their craft, books, and life in general.

I have some more news that I can’t share yet and it’s about killing me to stay quiet, but that’s how the cookie crumbles. Trust me, you will be the first to know when I can tell you.

That’s enough for now!

Since you haven’t seen them here in a while, here are a few shots of Jameson and Jordan, aka The Minions, on our latest adventure. They are very happy to be home and back on their porch.

Sunday Smatterings

Sunday Smatterings 1.28.18

Hey there, chickens, how's it going? All goes here. I am deep into a revision of September's standalone. It's a different kind of story for me, and I am working hard to make it right. This is the stage when the manuscript has left Scrivener and is in Word, and it's hella-hard for me to see the forest for the trees. It's due in a short week, and I'm a wee bit worried about that deadline.

Not so worried that I didn't take advantage of the 60ΒΊ Friday afternoon to sneak out to the golf course and get in nine holes – shhh... don't tell my editor. Honestly, I've been staring at the screen for weeks, and a bit of fresh air was really helpful.

Also ran out Thursday evening to have a drink with fellow authors Kate Moretti, Emily Carpenter, Kimberley Belle before their Parnassus signing. We were joined by David Bell, too – That's a cabal of suspense writers, all under one roof. It was a fun night with some excellent writers you should be reading!

Murder on the Menu and Murder in Magic City next weekend... hope to see some of you in Birmingham and Wetumpka! The divine Laura Benedict will be visiting this week and we're driving down together. For a writer recluse, I seem to be seeing an awful lot of humanity...

THE SIXTH DAY

I present to you the cover of the next Nicholas Drummond book, THE SIXTH DAY!

Spiffy, don't you think? Here's a bit more about it:

When several major political figures die mysteriously, officials declare the deaths are from natural causes. Then the German Vice-Chancellor dies on the steps of 10 Downing Street, and a drone is spotted hovering over the scene. The truth becomes clearβ€”these high-profile deaths are well-constructed assassinations, and the Covert Eyes team is tasked to investigate.

With the help of Dr. Isabella Marin, a young expert in the enigmatic Voynich Manuscript and cryptophasia (twin language), Nicholas and Michaela home in on Roman Ardelean, a wealthy cybersecurity genius and a descendant of fifteenth century Romanian Vlad the Impalerβ€”often romanticized as Dracula. Ardelean believes the Voynich Manuscript will unlock the secret to curing his severely ill twin brother’s blood disorder and is willing to murder anyone who gets in his way, including Nicholas and Michaela.

Along with MI5, the Covert Eyes team must race against the clock to find Ardelean before he unleashes a devastating attack on London intended to destroy those he believes betrayed him.

THE SIXTH DAY releases April 10. If you'd like to pre-order, here's where you can find it. Also, Barnes & Noble has exclusive signed copies for pre-order... trust me, those took a while. Let's just say I streamed all of season 1 of Stranger Things whilst signing them...

Sunday Smatterings: Extended Edition

Sunday Smatterings 1.21.18

Hey, chickens, how's it going? We're thawing out in Nashville, thank goodness, at a balmy 60 degrees. We had snow on the ground two days agoβ€”talk about weather whiplash!! That's the South for you, though. The seasons are constantly at war, no matter what time of year it is.

Except for summer. Then it's hot for ten thousand years until we all melt into a puddle of salty sweat.

Last week was an interesting work week. I'm waiting for edits from my editor and suddenly figured out... I've turned in two books in less than a month, and I'm starting a new novel in two weeks, and I didn't quite know what to do with myself. So I slept, a lot, then began a new secret project. (Don't you just love when I dangle that carrot? It wouldn't be fun if I didn't surprise you every now and then, would it? πŸ₯•) You and I know each other pretty well by nowβ€”I can't sit still for more than two seconds. πŸ˜‚ I guess it's not the worst trait to have.

I did sit still for some great videos, though. All thought provoking and, in some cases, life-changing. It was a week of strong women begetting stronger women for me and the nation, and I'm feeling quite full of roar right now. #girlpower

Lots to cover this week (including an EBOOK SALE πŸŽ‰), so let's get cracking!

And here's your #girlpower:

Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold is magnificent, and this essay from the New Yorker does it justice. The documentary is illuminating, sad, surprising, and inspiring. In a winter of discontent, Didion's work might just be the ticket to understanding our world's many cycles. At the very least, it's a great primer on what it takes to be a writerβ€”a desire for passionate observation.

Shonda Rhimes' TED Talk: My Year of Saying Yes to Everything. If you click on one link this week, let it be this one. I don't care where you are in life, this is applicable to you.
